Donate Sanitary Pads to Empower Women and Girls in Rural India

Bhartiya Yuva Sabha is committed to improving the lives of adolescent girls and women in rural areas, slums, and orphanages across India. Our Women’s Empowerment Program aims to tackle the critical issue of menstrual hygiene, which directly impacts the health, education, and economic independence of millions of women and girls.

Program Objectives:
Health Counseling and Mentorship: We provide health education through female health workers who guide adolescent girls and women on maintaining menstrual hygiene and reproductive health, ensuring that girls remain in school and informed about their sexual health.

Affordable Sanitary Pads: We distribute sanitary pads to girls and women in rural areas, promoting safe and dignified menstrual practices.

Empowerment of Self-Help Groups (SHGs): Bhartiya Yuva Sabha works with women’s SHGs to provide mentorship, health counseling, and access to affordable sanitary pads.

The Challenge

Why are adolescent girls dropping out of school in large numbers across rural India?

A significant factor contributing to this dropout rate is the lack of access to proper menstrual hygiene products. For many girls in rural areas, menstruation is a source of embarrassment and an obstacle to their education. Instead of feeling empowered as they transition into womanhood, they experience shame and disruption to their daily lives due to the lack of affordable sanitary pads.

In India, menstruation remains a taboo subject, especially in rural villages. This silence around menstrual health results in a lack of proper knowledge about hygiene practices, leading to the use of unsanitary materials like cloth, ash, or even leaves. This not only causes health problems such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), reproductive health infections (RTIs), and even cervical cancer but also hinders girls from attending school during their periods.

Sadly, out of 355 million reproductive-aged women and girls in India, only 12% use sanitary pads, leaving millions exposed to serious health risks. Without access to menstrual hygiene products, many girls are forced to skip school during their periods, leading to lower school attendance and early dropouts.

For many of these women and girls, the basic right to sanitary products is an unaffordable luxury. As a result, they miss out on educational opportunities and the chance to build a better future. Bhartiya Yuva Sabha is committed to breaking this cycle of poverty and poor health by providing them with affordable, accessible sanitary pads.

23 million girls in India drop out of school every year when they start menstruating, and many of them end up facing acute health problems.

Mensuration is one of the key reason for
girls from disadvantaged communities to drop out of school.

Lack of sanitary pads, functional toilets, and low awareness of menstrual hygiene result in early school dropouts.

Only 12% of the menstruating women have access to sanitary pads, largely because of their financial condition.

How This Project Will Make a Difference:

We conduct health awareness sessions in schools, educating both students and the community about menstrual hygiene. Students are trained to become peer educators, spreading awareness and offering support to their peers. By distributing sanitary pads to girls in schools, we aim to reduce absenteeism and encourage girls to continue their education.

Additionally, we work with women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), providing them with health counseling, menstrual hygiene education, and distributing sanitary pads to rural women who need them most.

Our program is currently active in Delhi and Agra, with plans for expansion based on funding.

Potential Long-Term Impact

Initial feedback shows that girls in schools with peer-educators are better informed about reproductive health and more comfortable discussing topics such as menstruation, puberty, and relationships. This has helped reduce stigma and empowered these young girls to maintain their dignity during menstruation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bhartiya Yuva Sabha’s Women’s Empowerment Program?
Bhartiya Yuva Sabha’s Women’s Empowerment Program focuses on improving the health, education, and economic independence of adolescent girls and women in rural India. Through health education, mentorship, and the distribution of affordable sanitary pads, we aim to empower girls and women to live dignified and healthy lives, especially during menstruation.
In many rural areas, menstruation is still considered a taboo subject, leading to a lack of education about menstrual hygiene. Girls often resort to using unsanitary materials such as cloth, ash, or leaves, which can lead to infections and health problems. Providing access to sanitary pads ensures that girls can attend school, stay healthy, and maintain their dignity during menstruation.
The lack of access to sanitary pads is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism among girls during their menstrual cycle. By providing sanitary pads and conducting health awareness sessions, we help girls stay in school, avoid embarrassment, and continue their education without the hindrance of menstrual hygiene issues.
The program benefits adolescent girls in schools, women in rural areas, and members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs). We reach out to underprivileged communities in rural areas and provide education on menstrual hygiene, health counseling, and affordable sanitary pads to ensure better health and education outcomes for these women and girls.
